"Shipwreck Singer: Crashing Among the Rocks"

There are so many 1/1 token producers in the game of Magic. You have Soldiers and Goblins and Elves and Elementals and Saprolings. The list is endless and your opponents who run colors like White and Green always have the advantage in this department. If you are running a blue/black deck the early turns are always a massacre because tokenator decks always produce more creatures than you could block. Chances are once the +1/+1 Enablers like Crusade or +3/+3 Collective Blessing comes in you are already down to a critical level in life points.
Black has Mass Killing ability well enough and Blue has Mass Bounce but these range from 4 to 6 mana so you still need something that could make you survive the early turns or at least act as a deterrent to all those 1/1 critters that are coming your way.
"Yes, they really are..." |
Enter the Shipwreck singer who sings a song that no sailor...err...creature could resist. The small , weaker ones die upon hearing her song due to their aggression (Attacking creatures get -1/-1 until end of turn) and well the bigger creatures are unable to control themselves and attack if they are able.
Now to break that down if you are running a Blue/Black deck such as in EDH you could cast the Shipwreck Singer on Turn 2 , have it block and kill a 1/1 creature or you could wait until your opponent attacks and just wipe his weenie army out. If he or she forgets to read the ability that is.Your opponents would think twice about attacking you because all their 1/1 creatures will die. Even if your opponents are able to put enablers on the board or Lords like Goblin Lord the Siren could still give them fits because she still weakens the entire attacking army. Enough to ensure that when you get your Damnation or Evacuate none of these attackers would survive.
"Come to Papa..." |
Now for the Big Bruisers that merely laugh at the -1/-1 they have another thing coming. They will smash against the rocks. The Shipwreck Singer's song is so strong that it will force any creature to attack Hopefully you have something like a Consuming Aberration or A creature with Deathtouch like Hythonia to greet it with open arms. Ah there is nothing like certain death awaiting your opponents creatures. It makes them hesitate to cast anymore because you are going to kill it anyway.
The Shipwreck Singer seems like a lowly 1/2 creature but its Luring abilities are just what you need to control the board in a pinch. I expect to see her a lot in limited and in EDH tables pretty soon.
