"Outbreak Day 7: Adam and Eve Part 2"

"Outbreak Day 7: Adam and Eve Part 2"
by:
Virgilio F. De leon Jr.

"Adam?Adam?" He heard the voice but he did not see her. "Hey Adam pay attention. This could save your life some day..."

He opened one eye and looked at the teacher who was giving the lecture. The girl who woke him was Eve and all around them were all the other hopeful trainees who wanted to get in the Day Zero project. He normally did not bother with lectures and so did Eve, she was usually more on the physical side and was the usual reason why most trainees were either sent home or had an extensive stay in the base infirmary. With his guidance Eve knew where exactly to hit and how hard to hit the spot. It was easy to mistake Eve for just another pretty face , it might have been too late to realize that she could pummel your face into a unrecognizable pulp while still looking quite innocent.

"Adam? Adam?" He heard her voice again only this time it came with the strong wind that was hitting the Lighthouse they were in as well as the unmistakable stench that only the undead could bring with them.

He opened his eyes to look at the chaos that was unfolding beneath them. Having taken care of 4 D7 mutations has caused the D7 spots to collapse and he was trying to figure out a way to recognize the other 6 that he knew was in the unruly mass just below them.It was extremely rare for 10 of them to appear because any given population could only provide the genetic material for one or 2 at a time which means that the infecting agent that they were using was new and caused this unpredictable outcome , unless they were trying to get more samples to study of course. In order to survive here though ,without the support team coming in Adam calculated that all of the monsters should die. Unless he had to use drastic measures to preserve these samples.

"So what do we do now?" Eve asked.

"We even the odds a bit in our favor." Adam said as he strapped on the device he was tinkering with earlier to the core of the lighthouse. "Its time to make the night sky bright"

The undead that the Day Zero project creates a lot of material for experiments that could one day propel mankind to a higher genetic level but it was part of the protocol that less than 1% or the purest were allowed to live and later to be studied. For big populations such as this town the technicians allowed Adam to carry the device that would turn the Light house into a gigantic Tesla Coil. He was told that these served 2 purposes Electricity easily fries the brains of the lesser test subjects and...

"This would forcefully allow the others to change into their true forms."Adam started to explain to Eve."The weak ones would fry, the strong ones would merely be annoyed with the overload of electrical discharges coursing through their bodies and they would momentarily lose control. They do not have total control to begin with and this would make our lives extremely easy."

Man-made lightning hit the first Zombie, clothes and flesh instantly lit up and burned but the undead did not feel pain so it shambled on hitting another cluster of zombies which also ignited and hit others as they continued their unending march toward the Light house. Eve looked at all the burning undead and found herself impressed with the amount of damage his normally more cerebral husband could do. "He is deadlier than he looks" she muttered to herself.

The Day 5 mutations who caught fire were sturdier monstrosities  , their extra appendages flailed as if in pain but it was more of anger , some began to grow other pairs to replace the limb or head they have lost. Eve took care to destroy them with a single 50 caliber bullet to the head.

Adam knew that those milling at the foot of the lighthouse had a lesser chance of being hit by the randomly firing electrical impulses. He had a cruder version of dealing with them. He took the gasoline that powered the light house ( almost a full tank worth because the keeper never really used it) and poured it. A single shot ignited the milling mass and engulfed those next to it. Those who were not maimed in the explosion ignited others in the process and there was a greatly reduced number milling near the Lighthouse doors.

It was a couple of hours of observation that followed. The flames were now dying. The smell would have overwhelmed any normal human being but these two knew this smell and shrugged it off as if it were nothing. They were more focused on finding the remaining 6 creatures that would determine the success or failure of this mission.

"There and there" Adam pointed to Eve focusing the scope to have a clearer view of the awakening that was unfolding. Adam saw the sudden bursts of blood. A Blood Bloom. They were massive organic coccoons unique to the D7 class. Resembling flesh that would burst and usher in a new form that the world would rather not see. There were 5 of them and like insects coming out from a cocoon the 5 D7 emerged. Their flesh glistened as they moved.

One had the head of a little girl with a swollen body mass that was covered with numerous eyes. Each seemed to blink rapidly to flick away blood and flesh. Adam called her the Eye. He saw the experiments back at the lab , he saw that progenitor cells when activated could be turned into any kind of cell. The Day Zero project represented great strides in medical science and if a cell can be safely inoculated to replace limbs and regenerate dead nerve pathways no one in the world will ever know an imperfect body part or blindness or any of the known diseases. Man would almost live forever. He suspected that this form took hold of the lower spinal nerves and turned them into brain material of the central nervous system. This creature seemed to be looking at everything. None of the other zombies approached it and it was something that Adam was puzzling over because it looked so frail that a normal zombie could rip it to shreds.

2 others had unrecognizable faces as they stood up ,their faces blurred away by blood. Where rotting flesh should be on their bodies was now replaced by a well muscular naked form. Beings reborn to bodily perfection , all for their faces that remained destroyed. Adam suddenly thought of one of the lab technicians who claimed that these particular mutations could even lead to the fountain of youth. He maybe right because all the regenerative functions of the body are here on display and if these Faceless ones were any clue then greater heights were indeed possible. It was imperfect however since the process remained incomplete.

2 others Slithered out of their blood blooms more than stood. Their lower limbs fused into a skeletal tail that allowed them greater movement on the ground. Their jaws were wider and skeletal spikes protruded all along their bodies making them look like Undead Sharks. The scientists did warn them of this since some of the effects would allow the body access to  the human evolution's of the past. He remembered one of them saying that the Human body is like a vast library of everything that has gone before and all that knowledge is trapped within our very cells. The agents that cause this mutation is a key that opens a Pandora's box. It can be at any point in evolution and at this point it decided to mutate back to the human aquatic form.

2 occurrences of Twin mutations Adam noted. Another extreme case of D7. It seems like the agents caught a very special family in this town. They were in for it now. Being an Adam meant that he had access to files in the project but before briefing he was surprised that he could not access approximately 30% of the files regarding this particular mission. He was suspicious but decided to let it go because as far he was concerned the missions were becoming more and more routine.A little unknown would go a long way in motivating him.He knew Eve only needed the motivation of possible violence to have renewed Zeal. There was much to be gained here but there was also much to lose.

Adam began to rummage through his backpack once more.Time for drastic measures, he said to himself. There was a tough secret pocket at the back. This contained 3 vials of a golden fluid that seemed to give off its own light. This was a pool of a lethal encoded virus that was in itself proven to be harmful to any known form of life. It was one of the Day Zero projects earlier products.
A virus that could was once coded to eradicate one specific species at a time.He was even present when they inoculated several birds in North America that caused thousands of them to just fall from the sky.It was perfected to end anything. It was programmed cell death. Once injected it could take mere seconds for specific cells to go haywire and for the organism to die. An exploding heart or a melting brain does not look dramatic in his book but it is very effective.5 monsters and  one more in the mix who was watching. He was saving 1 vial for the last one just in case.He had to come up with a plan.He needed to know more.

The Undead Sharks were making a messy attack on anything that moved. They traveled from point A to point B in a speed that could only be described as a blur by the casual observer. They were snatching up the remaining of their brood.Engulfing them in one single gaping maw. More genetic material to consume and reprogram as far as they were concerned. They went at it with an efficiency that was frightening to behold.

The Faceless ones were also doing short work of anything they could get their hands on.One Day 5 mutation with 3 heads rushed one Faceless One. Its progression was blocked by a solid punch to the side of its rightmost head. The Tri-Head staggered to the left with the sudden blow but before it hit the ground the other faceless one punched its leftmost head now sending it to the right. The Faceless ones continued to bounce it around with their powerul punches. Cooperative Aggression as Adam again observed. The D5 mutant was finally allowed to hit the ground but only appeared to be  ground meat.

The Faceless Ones knelt and began to touch their prey.Adam focused the scope on their hands and observed the throbbing veins that began to appear. The veins began to spread up their arms and ended directly to their necks. It made a lot of sense to Adam , since their particular mutations did not allow them oral feeding these monsters were absorbing genetic material with their touch. He only hoped Eve was paying attention to all of this because she doesn't want to be held down by any of those hands.

After assessing the monsters that they had to face Adam now came up with a plan. 2 of these monstrosities must die.The other 3 must be preserved and they had to be constantly on the look out for the last D7 that would still be lurking out there. Eve would just have to incapacitate the 3 others. Any other result would waste time and effort. He calculated the probability and hated it but He and Eve have never failed before and they would not start now.Adam motioned Eve over. Eve didn't even notice it when he jabbed her with a syringe to the Heart. His wife crumpled on the concrete floor as Adam gave a grin. "This should be good" , he said to himself and then he threw Eve to the side of the lighthouse towards the undead that were still milling below.
