Ligo na U...Nabasa na Me...

Ligo na U...Nabasa na Me...
Ni:
Virgilio F. De leon Jr.

The first time I saw this book in National Bookstore I laughed at the title because it played on words in the modern setting. Ligo na U , Lapit na me has been a part of jokes that I tell around the office or in the house but when I finally read it...well it didnt change a whole lot I still have joke about this title. As a part of my Christmas book haul I went down to the business of reading it and found myself at times annoyed by the
main character and in equal parts rooting for him as he goes into the journey of being with someone who appears to give him everything he wants but not all that he wants. The L word plays a lot into the narrative but only after Intoy realizes that he does have those sort of feelings.

It is always a thrill to meet someone as complicated and loveable as Jen.(kakarelate) Part crazy and part
loveable. Part challenging and part easy...Jen seems to exude the same level of affection and craziness in some of the women that I have known. It is good for Intoy (His nick name , his real name has a great back story all of its own) because as he said he doesnt have all the goods in the looks department. He does seem like a likeable character but you get the feeling that his thought processes are a bit winded. The story is often
cut short by his observations on life. Well those are funny parts and you get the sense that Jen and the
story that they are in is just really a background. This is really about Intoy expressing his views about
the world in general. Some of it is funny , grim and practical. I breezed through the book but it has left
something in me. I often want to use the terms pukang ama and anak ng baklang baka but only when the
approriate time is right. well every memorable character needs a catch phrase and Intoy has those two.

Ligo na U tells an implausible story but one that I have found exists more than we would be comfortable to admit. Human attraction is a messy thing and Eros Atalia has shown us that in this life anything can
happen. Including meeting and losing someone like Jen.
