"The Magazine"

 "The Magazine"

by:

Virgilio F. De leon Jr.MD

While on our usual Fridate, my wife spotted a magazine and surprised me by wanting to buy it. It was about PCOS, so I figured she was genuinely interested.

Fast forward to earlier today(Now a Monday)—I got home and noticed she was holding the magazine. I thought, Maybe she didn’t get to finish reading it because I came home.

Then, right before dinner, I saw her again—still clutching the same magazine to her chest. Maybe she’s planning to read it in the bathroom, I thought. (As one does.)

Curious, I asked during dinner,

Me: “Oh, was the article on PCOS good?”

Hanie: “Huh? Oh, that magazine? I haven’t read it yet.”

Me: “But the other articles? Were they interesting? What’s the latest?”

Hanie: “I just said I haven’t read it.”

Me: “It’s just… every time I see you, you’re holding it like it’s precious or something.”

Hanie: “Di nga. Naiinis lang ako kung saan ko ilalagay.”

(She hands me the magazine)

Hanie: “Palagay nga sa laptop ko. Pakalat kalat kasi eh.”

Nadali na naman ako dun ah. Assumerist kasi ako. Hahaha.

There’s something undeniably twisted—and kind of beautiful—about a two-card combo that makes your opponents draw themselves into oblivion. Not mill, not exile. Just... here, take your whole deck. Enjoy the slow-motion death by generosity.

There’s something sick about a two-card combo that lets your opponents draw their entire deck… to death.

In Magical Christmas Land, you could drop Naru Meha on turn two—assuming you hit the dream curve: land into Sol Ring into Arcane Signet on turn one, then don’t miss your land drop on turn three. That gives you six mana on turn three, which is enough to pop off this absurd combo.

And yeah, Hinata’s eyes are going to look pretty tragic as everyone’s “advantage” turns into pure doom. Their entire arsenal? Gone in a flood of unwanted cards.

This isn’t just a combo—it’s a chaotic act of kindness turned weapon. If you ever wanted to watch hope drain from the table in three turns flat, this one’s for you. Just don’t expect anyone to let you play it twice.

Some cards don’t just show up—they hit you right in the nostalgia. When I saw this one, it instantly transported me back to Final Fantasy VIII. I spent countless hours running through this place, then soaring above the world in it. For me, it wasn’t just a school—it was the school. My own version of Hogwarts.

Ah, the nostalgia is hitting me right smack in the face with this card. I spent days running around this place, and later in the game, flying around in it! This place was my Hogwarts, hahahah. The school where so many things happened.

I’m honestly surprised it’s not a legendary card. Sure, there were others like it in the game, but this one always felt special to me.

Still, I’m just happy to see it finally show up in card form. And hey, I’ll be more than happy ramming this 5/4 thing into someone soon, hahah.

Legendary or not, this card brings back everything I loved about that world. It’s more than just stats—it’s a memory made playable. And yeah, I’ll be slamming this nostalgic beast into someone with a big grin on my face.

"Hit or Miss: Gilgamesh Brings the Chaos from FF8 to Magic"

Final Fantasy VIII gave us a lot of wild moments, but few were as unpredictable—and oddly hilarious—as summoning Gilgamesh. You’d cross your fingers, praying he’d whip out one of his stronger swords for a one-hit KO… and instead, he’d sometimes hit like a wet noodle. Frustrating? Definitely. Memorable? Absolutely.

One of those unforgettable moments in FF8 was summoning Gilgamesh and hoping he’d swing one of his stronger swords and one-shot the enemy. Of course, that didn’t always happen. Sometimes, he’d deal zero damage. I really hated the inconsistency back then, but looking back now, those moments were hilarious.

In MTG, they’ve captured that same “dud or awesome” energy. When Gilgamesh enters or attacks, he digs for equipment from your library. Stack 6 equipment in your deck? Great. But there’s still that tiny chance he whiffs and gets nothing—just like his FF8 appearances.

The upside? He’s got a beefy 6/6 body, so even if he whiffs, he can still punch for 6 damage. As a commander, he has one-shot potential with enough boosts—or you chip away over four turns. Either way, he stays dangerous.

Gilgamesh in Magic is exactly what he should be: chaotic, powerful, and totally unpredictable. Just like in FF8, you never know if you’re about to win big or faceplant—but that’s part of the fun. I’ll be chasing that high when the packs drop.

"Adamantine Dreams and Turtle Tanks: When Final Fantasy Meets Magic"

"Adamantine Dreams and Turtle Tanks: When Final Fantasy Meets Magic"

by:

Virgilio F. De leon Jr.MD

There’s something weirdly satisfying about the idea of an indestructible turtle. Final Fantasy fans know the grind—especially when farming Adamantine from those massive, pain-in-the-ass turtles on the beach in FF8. It was brutal, but it felt earned. Now, Magic: The Gathering is serving up a version of that same unkillable vibe, and honestly? I’m here for it.

And yet another one of those times in Final Fantasy where this really tough turtle is needed to farm Adamantine. I spent a lot of time on the beach back then in FF8, hahah.

In Magic, there used to be that Pariah + Mother of Runes combo—basically nullifying all damage. This new guy? He’s got a built-in Pariah effect, but updated for all permanents, meaning your planeswalkers and everything else get the same love.

It’s tough at 20 toughness, but let’s be real—Wrath of God could still ruin your day. So, just to be sure… make it indestructible! Bwahaha!

Oh, and hey—another turtle for the turtle tribal deck. Hahah.

Whether you’re grinding beach battles in FF8 or building a fortress in Magic, turtles just keep showing up as the ultimate defense. This one blends nostalgia with raw power—and if you’re into turtle tribal, well, this tank just made your deck a lot meaner.

Magic: The Gathering has always evolved, but lately, Wizards of the Coast seems dead set on cranking the dial past 11. What used to be a slow buildup of power in Commander (EDH) has started to look more like a sprint. Remember when Godo hitting six mana felt like a big moment? Those days are fading fast.

So WotC keeps escalating the power level of cards. Once upon a time, we would wait for the Godo EDH player to reach 6 mana before worrying if they could pull off a cool equipment from their deck and kill someone with it.

With this guy Raubahn, we could be looking at a turn 2 12/12 swing. Or turn 3 at the latest, assuming the usual one land drop per turn. Land, then Colossus Hammer on turn 2, land drop and Raubahn... turn 3 swing, turn 4 someone’s already dead.

Of course, that assumes no one can remove him, but with Ward, even that gets tricky. And if he’s already holding the hammer, you might just eat some life loss to keep him on the battlefield. After all, 40 life gives you some room to gamble.

Raubahn changes the rhythm of EDH in a big way. He’s not just another strong card—he’s a reminder that the format’s speed limit keeps rising. Expect some wild games ahead. Ready or not, here comes turn-3 carnage.

Ghen , Arcanum weaver and Go-Shintai of Life's Origin is getting a really great toy! Ghen can normally get an enchantment back into play by sacrificing another enchantment and Go-Shintai of Life's Origin can do a Jodah for enchantments so that you can pay WUBRG and plop these powerful enchantment into play.

The casting cost is absurd of course but hey it was not easy acquiring them in the game so it makes sense that it will be hard getting them the normal way.

But heck this is magic! And we have been reanimating and cheating creatures into play forever hahahha

So turn 1 swamp dark ritual entomb exhune it is baby!!!!

How absurd is it to have 3 2/2 knights each turn for 4 turns!!!! And then to top it off at the 5th turn they all get +2/+2 and indestructible!!! Insane!

Just from the tokens that is 48 points of damage!!!!

I kind of like the prospect of opponents sweating it out for 5 turns trying to respond to this summon. Should be fun!

Chapter 1: The Idol and the Bird-Hater

The train from Tokyo to Hokkaido rattled beneath Umi’s boots as she hugged her backpack to her chest. Inside it? Bubble-wrapped hopes. A specially sealed display case. And space—lots of it—for this year’s conquests.

She wasn't here for relaxation or promotion work. No magazine shoot. No TV guest spot.

This trip was sacred.

The annual Shima-enaga Winter Wonder Fest was more than a niche convention. It was a pilgrimage for the devoted—those who adored the fluffball native to Hokkaido with the same fervor monks gave their mantras.

Umi grinned, scrolling through her checklist.

– Limited Plush: Snow Bath Ver.

– Artist Collab Enaga Pouch

– Official Enaga Cafe Mug

– Acrylic Stand of “Commander Puff” (Only 300 made!)

– Hot cocoa with Enaga Marshmallows (x3)

She squealed quietly, drawing curious glances from fellow passengers. She didn’t care. Let them stare. She’d fought her agency tooth and nail to get this weekend off.

When the train pulled into Sapporo, Umi was the first off.

Hayato had been in Hokkaido exactly two months and seventeen days.

He knew this because every one of them had sucked.

“I’m not running some bird cult,” he muttered under his breath, adjusting the “Welcome to White Puff Dreams!” banner for the third time.

The shop—formerly a neglected souvenir nook—reeked of his late grandfather’s poor taste and obsessive bird hoarding. Plushies in all shades of white, scarves with weird-eyed birds, enamel pins that blinked when tilted—it was like being trapped in a snow globe with stuffed animals.

Hayato didn’t get it.

Why this bird? Why the Shima-enaga?

He’d looked them up out of spite. “The Long-Tailed Tit subspecies native to Hokkaido. Cute, round appearance. Often referred to as ‘snow fairies.’”

Snow fairies. Please.

Hayato rolled his eyes and returned to the counter.

Then the bell jingled.

“Whoa…”

The girl who stepped in looked like she'd wandered off a film set. White beanie with puffy ears, pink cheeks from the cold, and boots dusted with fresh snow. She took one step inside, then froze like she’d seen God.

Hayato waited. Customers usually did this.

But she didn’t start browsing like a normal person.

Instead, she dropped to her knees in front of a plush pyramid.

“T-The 2022 Enaga Fuwafuwa Cloud Ver... still sealed...?”

Hayato frowned. “You gonna worship it or buy it?”

Her head snapped up. Her eyes were huge. “You—you run this shop?”

“Unfortunately.”

“You’re sitting on a historical site.”

Hayato blinked. “I think it’s just a souvenir dump.”

The girl stood, and her tone shifted from amazed to aggressive idol-mode real fast.

“Souvenir dump?! These are collector-tier plushies! This one still has the original soft tag! That scarf was discontinued after a thread error in the factory! How dare you!”

“Lady, they’re birds.”

“They’re not just birds.” She marched up to the counter. “You have the Yuki Puff 2018 in the back?”

“I have a pile of nonsense in the back,” he deadpanned.

She gave him the most disgusted look he’d ever received from someone that attractive. “You’re the worst kind of shopkeeper.”

That should have been it.

One weird girl, one argument, and gone.

But she came back the next day.

And the next.

And the next.

By the end of the week, she’d brought cookies shaped like Enaga heads (“For shop karma”), tea from her hotel, and—somehow—five new customers she met in the hotel lobby.

Hayato watched as she cheerfully rearranged displays, handled rare plushies with reverence, and explained each variant’s backstory like they were relics in a museum.

Despite himself, he started listening.

Despite himself, he started... liking it.

No. Not the birds.

Just... her.

"Thoughts on Triple S: Are you alive"

by:

Virgilio F. De leon Jr.MD

I was talking to a friend about the latest release from the 24 member girl group Triple S and I was saying that watching them all in school uniform while in a classroom reminds me so much of a Philippine Public High school class. Sure it would compose of a lot of pretty classmates but heck the over crowding sure feels the same. Especially in that scene where they were all huddled together like they were put in the middle of the room for warmth.

And it seems that Triple S has once again stood tall on being the Lalalala group which reminds me of some catholic hymns that they change every week just to confuse parishoners and probably discourage the overly enthusiastic from singing way too loudly like Ah...Ahhhhhh....ahahahha....Amen...and then they go off way to differently....Surely a very good deterrent. I will not sing any more if that ever happened to me.

I still like this group but for the life of me there is way too many of them to remember. I have no idea of their personalities at all and aside from the pretty faces that they have or the distinct few who can really sing or dance I am drowned by the sea of pretty faces.

Still love the comeback though.

Absolute Virtue seems like an insane card even for the 8 mana commitment in colors that normally do not have mana ramp.

Then again we did expect things like this to come out of this set. Protection from each of your opponents seems pretty sweet and this is surely going to be one of those cards that can unite a pod against you regardless if you are able to reanimate it early or play it later on in the game to render all those late game shenanigans useless.

A can’t be countered 8/8 flyer late game has the potential to end it all. So much for having leviathans and krakens as the end creatures for some decks. Just give me this one for that added opponent protection hahahahha

Our family GC lit up.

Aven: "Thanks for the jacket Dad!"

Me: " Thanks for what?"

She was on her way to school and she took a picture with this jacket already on.

Hanie: "Did you ask permission from Daddy ba?"

Aven: "Well he knows now."

Aven always says that this was her lucky Jacket and this is from someone who has a closet full of jackets. She always chooses this particular one. She had worn this to auditions and entrance exams. Even on her dreaded Math exams and Finals. And according to her it has helped her pass through all of those difficult, nerve wracking times.

She says that it gives her confidence. She knows that it reminds her of someone.

If I had the appraisal skill this jacket would have the following stats:

+10 Luck

+10 Charm

+10 Morale

+10 Water Proofing

Passive: Dad and Daddy-Lo's love reminder. (when worn by Aven)

It has a whole different set of stats when I wear it. Haha

I don't even know why I bother asking where this jacket goes.  i know it is where it should be.

"Proxy time saves time."

by:

Virgilio F. De leon Jr.MD

With the rising price of Magic cards I can now understand the need for some players to use proxy cards. With more and more decks requiring the same pieces at any given time it makes more sense to own just one original and use proxies as place holders when you use a particular deck.

With that being said when I have proxies made I make sure that these are cards that are something beyond my reach at the moment , may it be because of its price or availability in the market.

So I find it funny when people have proxy of cards that they can buy on the cheap somewhere. Something that is readily available and costs less than the price of the proxy they are having printed. They don't even try to alter it into something else , just the plain old .20 cent card that is readily available somewhere.

Then again as a guy who owns 178 EDH decks I can relate to the fact that I may remember having a particular card but have to go through a mountain of binders and boxes to find that one copy that may or may no longer be there I would rather pay the proxy card printing cast than hurt my back moving cardboard boxes around. Prevents my bones from hurting and saves me time.

"The End and Beginning of Oh My Girl."

"The End and Beginning of Oh My Girl."

by:

Virgilio F. De leon Jr.MD

There was a moment in the last Oh my girl concert , near the end where all of them were finishing their last song , where Arin approached YooA and walked side by side , arms in hips , laughing with each other as the other 4 members remained at the front and they had to run back to bow.

It might have been just a forgotten cue , the pair might have been thinking that it is over and we are going to make our final bows. Looking at the moment now. These are the two that left.

If anything Miracles have already learned from the past that these concerts always held the possibility of someone leaving as was the case for Jiho who had a very lengthy moment in another concert. And then she was gone.

When the news broke that only 4 members have resigned with WM and that YooA and Arin which for me still remain the main visual draws of the group are signing elsewhere , might even be in direct competition in the future as actresses or variety content people , I was devastated. I was going home and just decided to see updates. And there it was. The end of 10 years.

Sure there are promises and these are basically lies. Aside from Got7 I have not seen the majority of groups that promise that they will still promote with each other after leaving for other companies do so. The assurance from YooA felt like a lie as for sure since they will be on their own , promoting their own activities and such they will have no other time for group activities.

So it remains to be seen what will happen to Oh My Girl , can Yubin replace YooA and Arin as the visual center of the group? Can Mimi and her popularity carry them? Or will they go the way of B1A4 , once the backbone of WM , now some obscure sunbaes roaming the hallways.

While I still look forward to seeing how they will all progress like a possible fight between Arin , YooA and Jiho now that they are all in the arena of acting. There are some interesting developments even if the sadness will linger just a little bit.

A friend of mine showed me another version of this card. One that looked like an overpriced Mana dork but had the audacity to be labeled as Grand Summoner. I was underwhelmed by that card and silently hoping it was a fake.

Then came this card.

This card actually feels like a Summoner now. It will be enhancing the Guardian Force/Summons coming out of the main FF set which are Sagas/Enchantments now. Like this Shiva card. I think they have shown a 3 mana saga , Fenrir that would play really well with this card.

The current Shrine EDH or other Saga decks would consider a slot for her in the 99 as this brings back a powerful or key enchantment back into your side of the battlefield should an opponent find a way to destroy it.

Sure the finality counter would mean that this permanent would be exiled rather than stay in the graveyard where you have another chance to get it but this just increases the challenge and enhances the decision making skills of player on what to prioritize.

If the enchantment can assure your win wouldn't that be your priority?

I also believed that most of the god centric decks might consider this as well as she does give a lot of advantage with the trample and lifelink she gives. Oh and ward 2. The 4 mana cost of 3 colorless and 1 green assures that she can slot in with most of the decks with a very minimum to green. I don't think that she would be much of an adjustment slotting into the 99 of such decks.

As for me...might be able to use her as a commander for all those sagas I had lying around. Hmmmmm

 "Only the Good things"

(A tribute to a decade of Oh My Girl)

by:

Virgilio F. De leon Jr.MD

I

You came with a marching beat,

And fired straight at my heart—

That smile, an invitation,

Though I was nursing wounds in the dark.

II

It’s been a decade since,

Of drawing ever closer,

Of chasing dreams through windy days,

And singing beneath summer’s cover.

III

Long past the bloom

Of that Secret garden’s grace,

Its petals claimed a thousand hearts—

Non-Stop from dusk till dawn.

IV

I remember loving you

Through all five seasons’ turn.

I only ever wanted

To keep you in my dreams a while longer.

V

But even when you try to make me smile,

There’s a crack I can’t quite seal.

The dream fades, slow and silent,

Till only its sweetness remains.

VI

Still, the marching beat echoes—

Distant, but steady.

And I will hold on

To the good things. Only the good things.

"The Vaccinator"

"The Vaccinator"

by:

Virgilio F. De leon Jr.MD

Masao was a down-on-his-luck doctor, the kind whose name had become a whispered warning in the corridors of proper hospitals. He wasn’t a bad physician—not exactly. But rumors stuck like oil on skin, and malpractice suits, even ones he could explain, were the kind of stains that never washed out. No one respectable would touch him now, and the only clinics willing to let him near a syringe were nestled in alleyways where the shadows lingered longer than they should.

So when his landlord came knocking—again—Masao did what any cornered man would do: he climbed out the third-story window and disappeared into the city mist. A few hours later, hunched in a ramen shop with one last cigarette and a phone that barely held charge, he found the ad.

“Seeking Medical Technician – West Coast Offshore Platform – Vaccination Protocol – High Pay, Immediate Departure.”

He clicked "Apply."

The job was simple. Fly out. Vaccinate about sixty rig workers. Stay a week for observation. Get paid. The offshore platform floated off the coast of Japan, a steel skeleton surrounded by sea and fog. Isolated. Quiet. The perfect place to disappear for a while.

But things stopped being simple on day four.

It started with strange coughing fits. Then, aggressive behavior. And finally, the screaming.

Masao followed the noise one night down a stairwell slick with sea spray. That’s when he saw it—a man, or what had once been a man, now hunched and twitching, his skin torn open and stretching in impossible places. His jaw hung low, unhinged like a snake's, and his fingers ended in black, sharp hooks.

The creature lunged. Masao scrambled back. In the scuffle, its tattered uniform slipped—and he saw the tattoo. A red snake coiled around a cherry blossom. The same tattoo Masao had noticed on a cheerful deckhand three days ago. One of the first he vaccinated.

A horrible realization gripped him. This thing was vaccinated. By him.

More followed. One by one, the crew turned. Something in the serum? A contaminant? Or was it deliberate?

Now, locked in a supply room with nothing but a med kit, a flare gun, and a fading emergency radio, Masao knows he needs to get off the platform. The supply boat won’t return for three more days. The rig’s radio has been smashed. The helipad's chopper is missing.

And the monsters are learning.

They move in packs now. They wait. They listen.

Masao wipes the sweat from his brow and studies the rig’s blueprint taped to the wall. There has to be a way. Maybe the emergency lifeboat. Maybe the comms antenna on the upper deck—if he can fix it. Maybe something in the lab that caused this mess could also stop it.

The clock is ticking. The creatures are adapting.

And Masao knows: the only way to escape the rig… might be to uncover the truth behind what he injected into all of them.

Masao’s mind raced as he stared at the blueprint, his eyes scanning for any path that might lead to a way out. The lab. It was the only place he hadn’t checked yet, tucked away in the bowels of the rig near the engine room. If there was anything in the system that could explain what was happening—or better yet, reverse it—he had to find it.

But the path to the lab was far from clear. The monsters—no, these were people, once—had been moving in packs now, seemingly aware of his presence. Their twisted forms had become faster, more intelligent. And Masao, despite all his medical knowledge, felt utterly powerless in the face of it.

He moved quickly, his heart pounding in his chest as he crept through the dimly lit hallways. The smell of saltwater and oil hung thick in the air, and the occasional screech of metal scraping against metal sent a shiver down his spine. He avoided the main corridors, ducking into maintenance passages and crawling through narrow crawl spaces to avoid detection.

He reached the lab’s entrance after what felt like hours, the door sealed tight. A security keypad glowed faintly in the darkness.

Masao cursed under his breath. The security system was still intact. He could feel the pressure mounting. If there’s a way to reverse this, I need to find it here.

With no time to waste, he fumbled for the emergency override codes he’d found earlier in a medical manual from the rig’s storage. He’d memorized the numbers, but his shaking hands made it difficult to enter them correctly. A beep confirmed the door was unlocking, and Masao exhaled sharply in relief.

The door slid open, revealing the sterile, fluorescent-lit interior of the lab. It smelled like antiseptic and chemicals—much like any other medical facility. But this one felt wrong, like the calm before a storm.

Inside, rows of sealed medical cabinets and refrigeration units lined the walls. Test tubes, syringes, and vials were neatly arranged, but there was something more disturbing about the place. A faint humming sound filled the air, and Masao’s eyes landed on a large tank in the center of the room, its thick glass obscured by condensation. He stepped closer, and his breath caught in his throat.

Inside the tank was a dark, pulsing mass—an almost organic shape suspended in a fluid that wasn’t quite water. It looked… almost human. Masao couldn’t help but feel the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end.

Was this the source of the contamination? What had the rig’s company been researching out here?

He walked toward the computer terminal that stood next to the tank, his pulse quickening. The screen flickered to life as he swiped his palm across the surface. He began typing furiously, trying to access the medical logs and anything related to the vaccine. As the data rolled in, his heart sank.

The vaccine wasn’t a vaccine at all. It was an enhancement serum. They’d been experimenting on the workers, injecting them with a virus designed to accelerate their physical and mental capabilities. But something had gone wrong. The virus mutated, turning the workers into horrific, monstrous versions of themselves.

A small, hidden file caught his eye. It was labeled “Subject 92—Viral Mutation.”

Masao clicked it open, and a face appeared on the screen—one of the crew members from the platform. A young woman, smiling, her arm marked with the same tattoo Masao had seen on the creature. The file revealed her name: Mikae Iwasaki.

She had been one of the first to receive the serum, along with several others. The file detailed an escalation of symptoms—aggression, loss of cognition, heightened strength, and finally, full transformation into the creatures now stalking the rig. The timeline of the mutations was disturbingly fast.

Masao recoiled. He had helped administer this experiment unknowingly.

And now, he was living the consequences.

His only hope lay in one of the vials on the counter. According to the logs, there was a cure—a serum that could reverse the effects of the mutation. But it was incomplete, untested, and possibly as dangerous as the virus itself.

Still, Masao knew he had no other choice. He grabbed the vial, slipping it into his jacket pocket. But just as he turned to leave, the lab door suddenly slammed shut, the lock clicking into place behind him.

A low growl echoed through the lab.

He wasn’t alone anymore.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Masao froze. The growl reverberated through the lab like a low tremor, and he turned slowly toward the source.

The creature stood just inside the doorway, its body bent unnaturally, bones jutting at odd angles beneath distorted flesh. Its skin shimmered faintly, like it was still mid-transformation. Its eyes, once human, locked on to Masao with terrifying clarity. Not mindless. Not yet.

It was Mikae Iwasaki.

Her face was still partially recognizable beneath the layers of mutation—cheekbones sharp, mouth twisted but not entirely inhuman. Her tattoo, the red snake and blossom, writhed grotesquely on her bulging arm as though the ink itself wanted to crawl away.

Masao’s instincts screamed at him to run, to hide, to do anything but stay in the same room with her. But something about the way she stood—hesitant, twitching, almost as if caught between two states—made him pause.

Maybe there was still time.

His hand slipped into his coat and clutched the vial of the unfinished cure. He looked at the label: “SERUM D-0.9 // REVERSION PROTOCOL – UNSTABLE”

No instructions. No dosage. No idea what it would do.

Mikae took the full dose of the virus, he remembered from the logs. She was patient zero. If anyone would resist this… it’s her.

He loaded the syringe with the shimmering blue liquid, trying not to let his trembling fingers fumble. Mikae stepped forward, her breath a low rasp, her claws clinking softly against the floor.

“Mikae…” Masao whispered, his voice catching in his throat. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know. I’m going to fix it.”

She let out a broken sound, somewhere between a snarl and a sob.

Masao lunged.

The needle sank into the side of her neck. She roared, throwing him across the room, glass shattering around him. Masao slammed into a medical cabinet, the air knocked from his lungs. He scrambled up, bruised and bleeding.

Mikae had collapsed, convulsing violently. Veins bulged beneath her skin, pulsing black and then… fading. Her muscles shrank slightly, bones cracking as they tried to realign. Her screams twisted into something more human.

Then—silence.

She lay still.

Masao, panting, slowly approached. Her body was curled on the floor, breathing shallow. The monstrous features had softened. Her claws were gone. The tattoo on her arm now looked faded, like it had aged fifty years in a moment.

Her eyes fluttered open.

“D…doctor?” she rasped.

Masao knelt beside her, stunned. “Yes. Yes, it’s me.”

“I… remember… everything.”

Tears welled in his eyes. It worked. The cure worked. Crude. Unstable. But real.

But the hope lasted only seconds.

From the hallway, a chorus of screeches echoed toward the lab. Dozens. Maybe more.

They’d heard her scream. And they were coming.

Masao stood, his thoughts racing. He had one dose left. Not enough for the whole rig—but maybe enough to prove this could save them. If he could get off the platform, get it to someone who would listen...

He helped Mikae to her feet. She could barely walk, but she nodded when he pointed toward the emergency ladder behind the lab, one that led to the outside maintenance deck.

As the door began to rattle with clawed hands, Masao turned to Mikae.

“You were the first,” he said. “Now let’s make sure you’re not the last.”

"Sage of the Skies: Explosive Limited Bomb"

"Sage of the Skies: Explosive Limited Bomb"

I think that I was lucky not facing any deck with Sage of the Skies in my last Tarkir: Dragonstorm Pre release event. While I also do not play any standard and have no idea how fast current decks can be but one thing I can say is that this guy is a bit unfair because you get two of him if you have a cast a spell before you cast him.

So let us say you cast a one mana cost goblin and then for 3 mana get two 2/3? That has flying and lifelink? Talk about a swing in your favor in limited environments. The Tarkir set features a lot of dragons and some of them can be cast early and may have 3 power as well but Sage of the Skies can race before a dragon even comes out.

Lifelink is no joke after. If it hits just two times(both of them) then you are looking at an upswing of 8 in life total. A good buffer especially if the big creatures on your opponents side of the board are 2 or 3 mana away from being cast.

Sage of the Skies can block weaker opponents and still gain life for you. The 3 toughness makes sure it will stay around as Tarkir only has Channeled Dragonfire and Twinbolt which only deals 2 damage and with these spells in mind you can only get rid of one of these guys.

Dragonback Assault might be a good board Sweeper but you have to be playing Temur colors and have 3 mana ready before dishing out 3 damage to all creatures and planeswalkers. By then the monks might have gone to town already. But then again who knows.

A supervisor came into the clinic asking:

"Nurse may pumunta ba dito na Agent Mickey(Di tunay na pangalan)"

Nurse: "Ay sorry Maam sa records po namin eh Employee ID na lang ang nakalagay. Alam niyo po ba ang ID number niya?"

Supervisor: Ay oo...ito...(Recites numbers confidently)...Ay teka...ako pala yan.

Me: (At least nahanap mo na ang sarili mo Maam!)

Once upon a time—before I started my medical clerkship—I decided to accompany my then-girlfriend to a notoriously difficult call center application in Quezon City. I had cut class that morning, eager to spend more time with her. Even back then, all she had to do was ask, and I would’ve dropped everything.

The plan was simple: I’d go with her, wait outside, and be moral support. But at the last minute, she had a mischievous idea.

"Why don't you apply too? Just for the heck of it."

And so, unexpectedly, I found myself among a hundred applicants. It started with a written test that quickly whittled down the group, followed by an impromptu self-introduction in front of everyone. Somehow, during my turn, I managed to make the whole room laugh—don’t ask me how. I guess they were testing for confidence, and I was just trying to have fun.

After that, we were given a lunch break. I joked with her, “What if it's just the two of us who pass, no?”

It seemed like just a silly thought—until we were called back for the final interview. Out of the hundred, only three of us remained: Hanie De Leon, another girl… and me. Three out of a hundred! Suddenly, I found myself in direct competition with my future wife.

We laughed. It was surreal.

Each of us was placed in separate rooms for the final interview. I remember joking through most of mine—I had no intention of outshining her. If anything, I wanted her to get the job.

Afterwards, we watched a movie, completely forgetting about the results. That’s how it was during those early days—when we were together, the world faded away.

That night, as I was taking her home, we suddenly remembered and asked,

“So... only the other girl got the job?”

We burst out laughing.

Later, we would sometimes wonder—what if we had gone to the same school? Would we have competed? Or just had a lot of fun? I was older, so we’ll never really know. But it became one of those cozy, late-night questions we’d talk about during our quiet time together.

"The Path I took."

"The Path I took."

by:

My healthier path like the experience of a lot of my patients came from a health scare. A very high BP coupled with chest pain late evening on my birthday this year which caused me to stay in the MCU ER way past midnight.

My wife was behind me every step of the way. There was the "Purge" phase in our house where anything she deemed that would shorten my life was thrown away without hesitation. Setting up a healthy meal plan was daunting at first but she managed it along with her blossoming career.

And so...My BP was controlled. My Sugar was controlled. My food intake was calculated and then controlled. I gave up carbonated drinks , foods high in sugar and sodium. I cut my meals from a lot to two times a day with the occasional "Cheat day". It was a lot of work but it did not seem like a lot of work as it was survival mode. Fight or Flight response. In January to February there was anxiety in my heart. Would I to follow the path that my parents took? The sudden passing from a heart attack?

My wife as stubborn as ever refused. And so did my daughter. And like I said back then. They wanted me to be around and so to do I want to be around them. For longer if possible.

And so I added walking. Not jogging. Not running. Walking. And all the along the way as the pounds seemed to melt away and the BP and Sugar spikes became a thing of the past my family supported me and cheered me on. My Wife would exclaim "Oh My God Baby...76kgs ka na!"

A far distance from the 88kgs that I used to be 4 months ago. And fitting into clothes that I never thought possible again and my wife buying me better clothes because the old ones made me look like I needed more food hahahaha

And along this path I have found something else. Something I never thought possible. Hope. That I can overcome. That I can live longer than my genetics wanted to determine. I am 48 now. I will be writing more than a decade or more from now. One day I too will read this and say. I overcame.

"The Stillness of Home"

 "The Stillness of Home"

I

I know that your mind travels

Through time days or weeks or months in advance

I know that you have considered

every decision and every path

II

You tell me in rapid fashion

Oh your tired nights and frustrations

Of the love of the work

of the distance we have travelled

III

You rant ,you complain

You don't want your problems solved

So I sit or stay still

Just to hear you vent , Just to listen

IV

And though you say things

and you complain that sleeps elude you

In the mere seconds that you lay on my chest

A quiet snore blooms from you.

V

You called me your Home

And so I let you be still

In mind and body and everything in between

In these arms
